Does lack of sleep raise blood sugar?

It does, and diabetes isn’t needed for it: after a week of shortened sleep, healthy volunteers’ insulin sensitivity measurably declined. Nor does the effect come through one channel. Insulin response, appetite hormones, and sleep’s wholeness meet in the same picture; all three carry into the next day.
In healthy volunteers cut to five hours of sleep for a week, insulin sensitivity declined; their eating hadn’t changed at all. Sleep was the only change. None of the participants had diabetes. So the decline wasn’t a broken metabolism’s work. Any body short on sleep starts answering insulin more weakly within a few days.
Within two nights, short sleep pushes appetite’s two governing hormones the wrong way: leptin, which signals fullness, falls; ghrelin, which signals hunger, rises. Where appetite turns the next day isn’t random either; sugar- and starch-heavy, calorie-dense foods come forward. This shift’s most visible trace: on a tired day, the gap between two meals fills itself with snacking.
Long-term data point the same way. A review of studies following over a hundred thousand people found type 2 diabetes more frequent in short sleepers; in very long sleepers the rate rose too. In someone with diabetes, this effect shows in daily readings too. But the arrow doesn’t point one way. A broken-up night can itself be the trace of a sugar drop that night. Sleep health now counts among diabetes care’s basic headings; sleep patterns and sleep disorders joined what gets reviewed. The most common of these is breathing breaking up in sleep. Its recognizable face is clear: loud snoring, breathing pauses the person beside you notices, all-day sleepiness despite enough hours in bed.
